During the CrossOver Celebrity Weekend in Greensboro, NC Lynam took the opportunity to talk with AI about his NBA past, new focus on the game of basketball, and plans for the future.

On returning to the NBA: “I just want to do whatever an organization wants me to do,” Iverson said. “Everybody made a big thing about me not wanting to come off the bench, but I said that at that point because it never happened to me in my life and it was something new to me, and obviously I didn’t know how to handle it. But to be back on the biggest stage is my whole thing and I feel like I have a couple more years left in my career and I want to play. I sat through and watched the whole season and it was tough for me. Now I just try to do what I have to do to be physically and mentally able to get back on the stage.”

SLAM: You’ve got a pretty unique thing going on here with a basketball camp that encompasses much more than just basketball, and you brought it to a completely different state. Explain what you’ve got going on here.

Allen Iverson: It’s just something for the kids. Just giving back, that’s it. We’re bringing it out here to Carolina because there’s a big basketball tradition and I’m pretty sure through doing research that not many guys with my basketball background have done camps here. We’re just here to try to give back and bring this to a lot of kids and families who appreciate it.

SLAM: Being from the 757 and all, what made you decide to bring everything to Greensboro?

AI: Just doing research and bringing a camp to somewhere where it’s not usually done. That’s why I told my manager to find some spots where it’s not done a whole lot and he chose this spot.

SLAM: One thing that’s different about your camp as opposed to most others is the emphasis that you guys are putting on the off the court stuff through your I Choose Life foundation. Tell me a little about that…

AI: I mean, the whole thing is trying to save lives and send a positive message. I didn’t have people to be able to do that for me, and now that I have the opportunity to do it for someone else, it was an important thing for me in my heart to make sure I did it.

The 10-time NBA all-star stayed down long enough for an opponent to spin a basketball on his head before making a long three.

It was that kind of a wacky, fun-filled environment at the 10th annual Crossover Celebrity Classic on Saturday night at Dudley High School. Approximately 1,500 people turned out to watch the celebrity basketball game featuring Iverson, which concluded his weeklong basketball camp in Greensboro.

Proceeds of the event benefit the I Choose Life Campaign, a charity that focuses on helping young people understand the importance of making smart decisions
